What’s in a Name?

Choosing a name can be a daunting process. In 2009, when I was searching for a name for my school, I hesitated for a long time between Oui Montessori and Montessori Parent Child Center. Eventually, I chose Montessori Parent Child Center to ensure the school wouldn’t be confused with a more traditional Montessori program.

Yet, something about the name Oui Montessori stayed with me all these years. The music of the words resonated with me then and still does now: Oui, we, wee.

Why? Oui Montessori unites my vision as an educator and all that is close to my heart.

Oui Montessori is about helping families embrace a positive approach to raising young children. It also reflects the influence my French heritage has had on my perspective as an educator.

But Oui Montessori is ultimately about something bigger than me. It’s about we. We Montessori represents a community where we grow, reflect, and share our learning journey together.

Oui Montessori is also about serving the youngest children. Wee Montessori focuses on nurturing young children’s skills and character, empowering both parents and children alike.

It’s not uncommon to question oneself when starting something brand new. I experienced a brief moment of doubt when I first began working on this blog and wondered if Oui Montessori was the right name. While browsing the internet, I came across a post from my dear friend Kristine, an American Montessori educator who first introduced me to Montessori 20 years ago when we met in Berkeley, CA. She had just posted a picture of the French high-speed train (TGV) with the words: “ouigo.com.” I read it as a sign!

Kristine, now living in France, founded Anglais Autrement, a Montessori-inspired English program. Her work continues to inspire me as I reflect on how our educational journeys have evolved since those early days.

So, let’s get on board and go!
It is my hope that you will enjoy this journey with Oui Montessori.
